Ilkley Cycling Club officials are delighted with the success of Sunday’s first Cyclo-Cross races at Nell Bank.

The fledgling club attracted a strong entry from across the county and there was a large number of spectators out to back the riders. as competitive cycling returned to the town.

Club secretary Paul O’Looney said: “The event has been a great success. It has given the opportunity for so many local riders of all ages to try out this exciting sport.

“Furthermore, it has shown how our relatively small town can stage-manage events to this high standard, putting Ilkley on the national map for cycling again.”

In the main event, the favourite, Ian Taylor suffered a mechanical problem as soon as the race began and found himself last.

After having collected his spare bike, 39-year-old Taylor started to pick his way through the crowd.

At the front, Neil Crampton began to build up a substantial lead, but by lap 11 Taylor had chased down Crampton.

Another change later saw Taylor go on to win the race riding his wife’s bike.

Dave Johnston was the first Ilkley CC rider home, in a creditable seventh place.

Karen Valentine won the women’s race after dominating from start to finish.
