Ilkley's bright start was brought to a shuddering halt as Knottingley scored a converted try in the final minute to snatch the Yorkshire Division One points.
Defeat was frustrating for Ilkley as their pack held the uypper hand for much of the game but a worryingly high penalty count cost them dear.
Tom Bills kicked two penalties but Knottingley hit back with a try by scrum half Seed which stand off Coutts converted for a 7-6 lead.
Kirk Arundale put Ilkley back in front with a try converted by Bills.
Bills and Coutts swapped penalties before Knottingley snatch victory. Ilkley lost their own line-out and then had Neil Spence sin-binned as they tried to regroup.
Knottingley capitalised on their man advantage as Field scored from a line-out and Coutts landed the conversion for a one-point win.
