IN a thrilling encounter that had fans on the edge of their seats, Ben Rhydding Hockey Club's Men's First Team emerged victorious, defeating Brooklands by a narrow margin of 3-2.
It was a game that showcased intense action, dramatic twists and some exceptional performances from both sides.
The match began with a sense of anticipation in the air, as both teams looked determined to secure a positive result. However, it was Brooklands who struck first, taking an early lead and putting the pressure on Ben Rhydding.
Ben Rhydding responded with tremendous resolve. Their relentless attacking efforts paid off when Will Musgrave converted a penalty corner to equalise. The game was now finely balanced, with both teams fighting tooth and nail for control. Brooklands managed to regain the lead, putting themselves 2-1 ahead at half time.
Going into the final quarter the tension on the field was palpable, and it seemed as though the match could swing in any direction. In a pivotal moment Musgrave stepped up to take a critical short corner. With precision and power, he executed a sensational drag flick that left the Brooklands goalkeeper with no chance.
With the score level the match was poised for a thrilling climax, and it was Callum Franks who would provide it. Amidst a scrappy scramble in front of the Brooklands goal, Callum Franks managed to find the decisive touch, sending the ball into the back of the net. The roar of jubilation from the Ben Rhydding supporters echoed around the pitch as Rhydding took a 3-2 win.
Captains, Rob Ramsden and Matt Birch, were instrumental in defence and were able to celebrate coach David Birch's first league win.
Ramsden said after the game: “I was really pleased with the discipline and composure under pressure in the last quarter. We pressed aggressively as a team and took our chances to win the game.”
Ben Rhydding Women 0 - Gloucester City 1
In a tight encounter in front of a large and vocal crowd and with chances for both sides, Gloucester managed to score the only goal of the game and take the three points, to which Ben Rhydding had no response.
Next weekend the Women travel to Sutton Coldfield while the Men travel to Belper.
