ILKLEY could be the stage for another Battle of the Brits at the Lexus Ilkley Trophy.
Among the entries for the $100,000 ATP Women’s World Tour event at Ilkley Lawn Tennis & Squash Club on June 17-24 are Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Heather Watson and Sonny Kartal.
Burrage reached last year’s final, losing 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to Hungary’s Dalma Galfi, who is bidding to retain her title.
Kartal lost 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (9-7) to Burrage in last year’s semi-finals, while Dart was a quarter-finalist in 2018.
Also returning to Ilkley are Yuriko Lily Miyazaki, who reached the second round last year, Anna Borgan, who qualified, and Leeds’ Naiktha Bains.
Seven members of the world’s top 100 have entered - rising Czech youngster Linda Fruhvirtova, who is world No 59; Emma Navarro (75), Magdalene Frech (86), Tereza Martincova (93), Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (94), Galfi (98) and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (100).
The most striking name among the entrants for the $125,000 ATP Challenger Tour event, which is being held at Ilkley the same week, is former world top-tenner David Goffin.
The 32-year-old Belgian has reached the quarter-finals of three of the four Grand Slams – Wimbledon in 2019 and 2022, the French Open in 2016 and the Australian Open in 2017.
He also helped Belgium reach Davis Cup finals in 2015 (against Great Britain) and 2017, and reached the ATP Tour finals in 2017, losing to Grigor Dimitrov after defeating Dominic Thiem, world No 1 Rafael Nadal and world No 2 Roger Federer.
Goffin was only the sixth player to defeat Nadal and Federer in the same tournament.
Also entered is defending Ilkley champion Zizou Bergs, Goffin’s countryman, who defeated former world top-tenner Jack Sock 7-6 (11-9), 7-6 (10-8) in the final; and 2022 quarter-finalists Gijs Brouwer and Jiri Vesely, plus 2017 Ilkley winner Marton Fucsovics (Hungary).
Leading the British entry is Ilkley perennial Liam Broady, from Stockport, while other home entrants include Billy Harris, Aidan McHugh, Charles Broom, Arthur Fery, Jay Clarke and Dan Cox.
Five members of the world’s top 100 have entered – Jason Kubler (69), Nuno Borges (80), Fucsovics (83), Alex Molcan (86) and Vesely.
