A POPULAR running race, showcasing some of the best local trails, has this year been named in honour of a much-loved and missed coach for Ilkley Harriers and many others.
The Pete Shields Ilkley Trail Race takes place on Bank Holiday Monday (May 29).
It will be run in memory of Pete who died during the Covid pandemic in 2020, when the many restrictions in place prevented the Harriers from properly showing their gratitude for what he had given to running and to the club in particular.
A gifted runner and an outstanding coach, Pete had guided runners from far and wide, also leading training sessions for athletes at club, national and international levels over many years.
The race which now bears his name is a stunning 11km trail race with spectacular views over the Wharfe Valley and across to Ilkley Moor.
It starts at 11.30am next to Ilkley Lido and is suitable for all abilities. It costs £12 to enter beforehand or £15 on the day.
All profits from the race will be shared between Marie Curie, the UK’s leading charity for people living with a terminal illness, and the Revival Centre and Orphanage in Matugga, Uganda, which has been supported since the race started in 2008.
