BEN Rhydding Women put on a fine performance to bring the points back from Durham University over the weekend.
They showed a great deal of grit and determination to overturn a one-goal deficit ahead of sealing a huge 2-1 victory. Rhydding went behind after a loose ball broke kindly for one of Durham’s forward players and the visitors finished the first period one down.
The away side began to take control after the break and a well taken short corner was expertly finished by Kirsty Goodbold to level the scores.
A second goal soon arrived for Rhydding, as Poppy Lawson raced clear down the left wing before despatching a brilliant shot beyond the reach of the keeper.
With their 2-1 lead still intact, it was time for Rhydding’s shot stopper Charlotte Smith to step up and be the hero. A penalty was awarded to Durham, but Smith guessed right and tipped the ball round the post to help her side seal a memorable 2-1 win.
With defeat for Leeds at the weekend, it is now all to play for in the league with two games to go. Next up for Rhydding is the last home game of the season against Leicester City on Saturday at 1.30pm.
