A YOUNG Ilkley Harriers member stormed to bronze in a major world triathlon event.
Dominic Coy took on the cream of young European runners and finished in an amazing third place at the 2021World Triathlon Junior Championships in Quarteira, Portugal.
This event was originally scheduled as part of the World Triathlon Grand Final in Bermuda, but was moved to Portugal.
Meanwhile, in running action closer to home, a number of Ilkley Harriers members took part in the welcome return of the popular Guy Fawkes 10 race, organised by Nidd Valley Road Runners.
This hilly road race starts and finishes at the beautiful Ripley Castle in North Yorkshire, and is also known for its challenging hills all of which have been given entertaining names such as ‘the Birstwith Brute’ and ‘the Swincliffe Swine’.
Ilkley’s Sally Armitage, Rachel Carter and Rebecca Shaw won the ladies team prize, Rachel Carter also being first F45. Michael Abrams-Cohen was the first Harrier home in a great time of one hour four minutes and 42 seconds, followed closely by David Foyston in 1.05.20 and Andrew Overend in 1.05.32.
All race runners were rewarded for their efforts at the event with a chocolate-filled goody bag.
On the fells, two Harriers took part in the Shepherd’s Skyline fell race, a challenging 10km race, organised by Todmorden Harriers.
The race involves running from the Shepherd’s pub near Mankinholes up to Calderdale’s famous landmark, Stoodley Pike and down, before reascending to the moor followed by a fast descent. Jim Ryder ran this in 57 minutes six seconds, coming in 30th position, followed by David Holder in a time of 68.29.
Meanwhile, lots of Harriers took part in the weekly parkrun events at the weekend.
Catherine Gibbons was second lady to finish at the Richmond parkrun in an impressive time of 20.42 Her team-mate Michael Lomas was second male to finish at the Barry Island parkrun in a time of 20.08.
Some more top 10 parkrun placings for Ilkley Harriers members included Adam Gerrish, who finished in fifth place at the Chevin Forest parkrun, which is located in the Wharfe Valley.
Meanwhile, Michael-Abrams-Cohen finished in seventh place at the Fountains Abbey parkrun, which is based near Ripon, North Yorkshire.
