Ilkley Harriers are celebrating after two of their runners were selected for Great Britain.
Tom Adams and Georgia Malir have won places in the GB team for next month’s World Mountain Running Championships in Pol- and.
It is a tremendous accolade for the runners and further evidence of the strength of the Ilkley Harriers club.
Both athletes have been enjoying outstanding years and their form in Saturday’s Great Britain team trials at Whinlatter Forest in Cumbria brought them their latest honours.
Seventeen-year-old Malir had set her sights on winning a place in the team for the World Championships after representing Great Britain in last month’s European Championships in Bulgaria.
She will compete in the junior women's race in Poland after pulling off a tremendous victory in Saturday’s trial. Malir, who was 12th in Bulgaria, held off reigning European up and down champion Annabel Mason at the trial race to take first place.
It was another impressive performance from a runner who seems to improve with every race.
Catriona Graves clinched the final spot on the team.
The senior men’s trial attracted a quality field, but Adams rose to the challenge. He finished in fourth place behind Rob Samuel, Andi Jones and James McMullan to clinch selection.
Harriers chairman Paul Wood said: “Everyone in the club is proud of and inspired by Tom and Georgia’s achievements. “Tom has been voted the club’s runner of the year for the last five years now, he has been a great model for our many younger runners winning many events in the red and green of Ilkley Harriers and he has had a great effect on teams as he inspires others to reach new levels.
“Georgia won the club’s u-23 runner of the year award and her performances on the track, cross country, and fell have been the talk of the club. “Although Georgia now benefits from coaching from Andy Hender- son at Carnegie Sport, her running roots are with the junior Harriers and her performances show what a great start that training can give.”
