Thomas Tuchel appointed new England football manager

Under-21 coach Lee Carsley has been the interim England coach for the Nations League matches during the autumn.

But now Tuchel will permanently replace Gareth Southgate, who resigned after England's defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 in July, according to Sky News.

Who is Thomas Tuchel?

Thomas Tuchel, 51, led Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021 but was sacked the following year.

His latest role came with Bayern Munich, a position he vacated during the summer.

Tuchel, who has also managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich, has been among the bookmakers’ favourites for the England job since Southgate stood down after Euro 2024.

He is the first non-English manager to take the role since Fabio Capello quit in 2012, and only the third overall, following the Italian and the Swede, Sven-Goran Eriksson, Sky News reported.

The PA news agency revealed earlier today, Tuchel was in advanced talks with the Football Association to become the new England manager.

The news came following similar reports in the German media last week.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola – who is out of contract at the end of the campaign – had also been sounded out about the role, according to a report in The Times on Monday.
