The BBC has reportedly 'indefinitely' paused the production of new series The Split Up, a spin-off of the popular drama The Split.

The new series was originally announced back in February and was set to expand the legal world of the original series.

The Split Up was expected to begin filming in Manchester next month but now it's reported that the BBC is taking a pause on the series for some time.

It comes as a BBC insider said that ‘editorial reasons’ are why the series is 'indefinitely' paused.

However, there have been no specific details from the team for the exact reason why and when productivity will start again.

Spin-off of BBC drama 'indefinitely' paused

Filming is expected to start again at a later date between the BBC and production team Sisters.

The show was created by Ursula Rani Sarma and is based at Kishan Law, a high-end Manchester-based British-Asian divorce firm.

However, the family firm is thrown into disarray when a sudden secret is exposed.

At the time of the announcement, Ursula said: "I watched The Split with admiration over the years, and I was honoured to be asked to create The Split Up: a spin-off which introduces a whole new family and city while still holding on to the warmth, humour and heartbreak of Abi Morgan’s original series."

The series is expected to help address the lack of authentic British Asian stories on TV.

However, while the spin-off will not start filming just yet, fans of The Split can expect a new two-part addition later this year.

The two-part special will be set two years after the last series and will focus on Hannah as she finds love while at a wedding.

The series will focus on break-ups, reunions, weddings and romance according to the BBC.
