BBC Call the Midwife fan favourite couple Matthew and Trixie, played by Olly Rix and Helen George, are set to face marriage problems in upcoming episodes.

It comes as series 13 draws closer to the end of what has been an emotional rollercoaster for characters and viewers alike.

At the end of series 12, Matthew and Trixie finally got married but so far things haven't been completely smooth sailing for the newlyweds.

The couple has been facing troubles as Matthew struggles to tell Trixie the truth about their money troubles and Trixie has to balance work as a midwife and as a new wife.

Call the Midwife Matthew and Trixie face marriage troubles

Episode 5 of Call the Midwife saw Matthew concerned about finances despite a trip to the seaside with the rest of Nonnatus House.

Money concerns only grew for Matthew after Trixie passed her driving test and quickly began looking at high-end cars and pre-schools for Jonty.

Now, in a teaser for the upcoming episode, things are only set to get harder for the Call the Midwife couple as the pair face off in another argument.

Trixie is set to learn the truth about Matthew as she says: "You've been lying to me about this for months."

As Matthew replies: "I haven't been lying to you, I've been shielding you."

Actors Helen George and Olly Rix previously discussed the future of the couple as George said: "Because of the time period, he feels the pressure and the need to take the fiscal responsibility on without including her, but she's such a collective, community-driven person that she wants to be involved.

"She wants to be involved in the decisions and has a very modern outlook on this idea of a relationship. But because of his upbringing, he's very much into the notion of the man solves the problem, I will sort this, and that's hard."

As Rix added: "The walls felt like they were closing in. It was exhausting and it was tough to get through.

"And it was a different experience filming the final episodes. [Directors] were so conscientious about telling the story with respect and honouring what we'd done for four years because it meant a lot to us to say okay, if we're going out, we're going out swinging, we're going to leave everything on the table."
