CAMERA CLUB: A packed club meeting saw Tim Pile’s Have I got Nudes for You illustrated photography lecture last week. Tim specialises in artistic nude in the landscape images and explained how he works with professional models and simple lighting to achieve his shots. Coming up tonight is Action Photography by Duncan Hill. He is a member of top photographic group Gamma and will show work that embraces sport and dance photography. Visitors can attend for just £3. but, if you are thinking of joining the club, you can come to three meetings for free without obligation. We meet on Fridays, at 7.30pm, at Church House, Church Street, Ilkley LS29 9DR.

BAPTIST CHURCH: At Thursday’s church meeting, members were informed that there had been no developments in the search for a new minister. The meeting discussed how the church was holding up, as we entered the second year of the interregnum. Anne Wilkinson organised a tea party on Saturday afternoon in aid of educational projects in Haiti. A delicious tea was served and there were various stalls. In all, £867 was raised – a magnificent effort. Congratulations to Anne and her team of helpers for all the hard work which they put in and to everyone who supported the effort in any way. The Sunday morning service was conducted by Paul Chapman. The lessons were read by Colin Ashton, and Paul’s sermon dealt with the theme of baptism. As part of the service we used a liturgy circulated by the Baptists Union which was being used in the service of Induction for the new General Secretary of the Baptist Union, the Rev Lyn Green, on the same day, and thereby we expressed our solidarity as the family of Baptist churches in the UK. The evening service was conducted by Lex Morgan. Enid Morgan-Wynne read the lessons. The sermon was based on a collection of Jesus’ sayings on the right use of wealth, preserved by Luke’s Gospel. The service concluded with the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. At the Wednesday fellowship, the speaker will be Paul Felgate who will talk about the Work of Oxfam.

ILKLEY ART CLUB: The club meets on Tuesday, at 7.30pm, at The Clarke Foley Centre, Cunliffe Road, Ilkley. Club membership is now open and prospective new members will be welcome to come along for a free taster session. Last Tuesday there was a full house attending the club for our first demonstration/workshop evening with Miriam Laville. It was a very interesting and enjoyable evening, resulting in some unusual work produced by club members. Note in your diary October 8 for the open evening when you can meet members and find out what goes on at the club. For more information, e-mail ilkleyartclub@live.com or call Paul Shaw on 07771 754605.

INNER WHEEL CLUB: For their first meeting after the summer break, despite the rather grey evening, members were able to enjoy days in the garden, courtesy of school gardener Lois Evans. A keen gardener, having noticed a somewhat neglected courtyard garden at the school her children attended, Lois volunteered to help transform it and turned the area into an outdoor space the children could enjoy and learn in. Taking it on to a professional level, at her second school, former physiotherapist Lois was given the grand title of Outside Space Project Manager and, poached by another school, Lois’s latest project is on a much larger scale. GARDENERS’ ASSOCIATION: Next week Ilkley will be invaded by Weird and Wonderful Plants or at least Michael Myers (not the famous film actor of Austin Powers fame!) will try to inspire us to allow it to happen. Botanical Oddities, Frolicsome Fruits, Unusual Plants - what more could you ask for? Well, if you ask nicely he will give you some explanations on Juvenile Behaviour - of plants that is. The meeting starts at 7.45pm, on Thursday, October 3. Doors open at 7.30pm at the Ilkley Parish Church House Hall, near the main lights in Ilkley. Admission is £1 for members and £2 for non-members. Tea and Biscuits are free. Our sheds will be open on Sunday, October 6, at Leeds Road Allotments and then on November 10. See ilkleygardeners.org.uk for more information.

ST MARGARET’S CHURCH: The Vicar, Fr Philip Gray, went back to his native Humberside this week to conduct the funeral service for a former parishioner, Jean Millar, who moved to Hedon last year after a spell in an Ilkley care home following the death of her husband, Alan, two years ago. The couple lived for many years in Guardian Court not far from St Margaret’s, where Fr Alan devoted many years of his retirement assisting in the spiritual life of the parish. A late vocation after war service in the Navy followed by many years as a salesman for the famous Teesside engineering firm of Dorman Long, Alan freely acknowledged the love and support he received from Jean in a 57-year marriage which produced four children. The mourners gathered at St Augustine’s, Hedon, on Monday will count themselves fortunate to have known this exemplary couple.
