Care home to join in Memory Walk

Staff and residents of Bupa’s Burley Hall Nursing Home in Burley-in-Wharfedale are taking a big step to help people living with dementia by organising a sponsored community Memory Walk to raise money for vital research and care.

The local history-themed walk will take place tomorrow and forms part of the Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk initiative, which is the charity’s biggest annual fundraising event in partnership with Bupa Care Services.

The local community are being urged to take part, with the walk starting at 4pm from the home in Cornmill Lane and going around the history trail of Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Care home manager, Lorraine Moss, said: “We are all in the process of getting our walking boots (and sticks) at the ready!

“Memory Walk is a worthy cause for our local people to get involved with and I’m sure everyone, no matter what their age, will have a great time at these fun, social events. We hope as many people as possible will join us to take part.”

ST MARY’S CHURCH: The PCC is holding a coffee morning in the parish centre, Station Road, on Saturday at 9.30am. Do come and enjoy an hour of fellowship with a cup of coffee or tea, and the chance to buy freshly-baked goodies and win raffle prizes. Services on Sunday are 8am communion in church, 9.45am parish communion in church, and our informal service tea&toast@ten, at 10am, in the parish centre. Continuing our series of services based on the letter to the Ephesians, this week’s topic is No longer aliens but fellow citizens. The youth group, ‘Rev’ meets in the parish centre, at 6pm, for year six-plus and at 7pm for year nine-plus.

PROBUS CLUB: At the club meeting last week our speaker Roy Cressy gave a fascinating presentation entitled ‘Ships and Where to see them in the UK’. With the use of outstanding slides of many and varied vessels, we saw military ones, fishing ones, oil tankers, cruise liners and ships from China, Russia, Argentina and Holland carrying cargoes of grain, timber and a wide range of other commodities. The variety was astonishing. Mr Cressy’s journey round the UK ports, photographing and accumulating knowledge of the variety of vessels was impressive, as were his descriptions. It all made for a thoroughly-entertaining morning.
