ST PETER’S CHURCH: The parable of the unjust steward, or put in modern language, the story of the shrewd accountant, is a challenge to any preacher. What do you say about a land agent that is sacked for squandering the owner’s profits but then excites his admiration by discounting his debtors’ bills, and how do you make palatable the story’s punchline – that you cannot serve God and wealth? An obvious response is that wealth is a good servant but a dangerous master, but last Sunday’s preacher, the Rev Paul Summers, simply left it to us to apply the acid test – what would you do if you won the lottery? The reading group enjoyed a stimulating discussion of Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up the Bodies, though someone asking what part God played in the dissolution of the monasteries brought us temporarily to a stunned silence. Thomas Hardy’s Blue Eyes is the next up for discussion. In addition to the normal services over the coming week there is the Macmillan coffee morning at 10am tomorrow and Liam Kelly’s baptism at noon on Sunday. Fospa teas continue until October.
