The man leading ambitious plans to redevelop a swimming pool has unveiled his “vision” for the site.

Richard Threlfall is part of the newly-formed Ilkley Pool Group, which wants to demolish and re-build the town’s indoor swimming pool and draw up plans to improve the whole Denton Road site, which includes the lido.

But Mr Threlfall, head of UK infrastructure, building and construction for major advisory service, KPMG, is taking on the task as a personal venture, and wants people living in the town to offer their ideas to create a masterplan for the site and the area.

And he believes funding for the project, which could cost at least £10 million, could then be sought from a range of sources.

This weekend, some of the Ilkley Pool Group’s ideas for the pool and lido site will be on display before they go on view in Ilkley library for two weeks ahead of a public meeting next month.

To give people ideas, the pool group has commissioned some detailed drawings of how a new pool could look, complete with children’s pool, cafe, spa area and possibly an indoor sports hall. Mr Threlfall also mentioned plans for the wider site, including an athletics track and maybe even look at heating the lido.

“We need to decide what we want and have a masterplan everyone can buy into,” said Mr Threlfall, who lives in Ilkley.

“We would want to demolish and re-build an indoor pool facility, but something that compliments and is harmonious to the lido.

“It could be in a modern art deco style and we’d also look at the whole footprint.

“That’s the vision and that’s what we want to achieve.

“We’ll launch the survey for Ilkley residents and visitors and explain the history of the place and what we’re trying to achieve to try to get people starting to think about what it would look like.”

Mr Threlfall, who has worked on major school and hospital building projects across the country, said he felt compelled to think about doing something after taking his children to the indoor pool during the past few years.

“To say it’s showing it’s age is a bit of an understatement,” he said. “It’s a piece of architectural vandalism.”

He says depending on how people want the new pool and lido site to look, the Ilkley Pool Group can then approach the likes of the Heritage Lottery and Sport England for potential funding as well as raising money in the town.

So far “positive” discussions have been held with Bradford Council, who own the pool and lido site and Ilkley Parish Council.

“The parish council support is fantastic,” Mr Threlfall said.

“We’re not going to achieve anything without them.”

Heathcliffe Bowen, chairman of the parish council, said he hoped his authority could give the Ilkley Pool Group full backing.

“I would like to think its something we can all get behind,” he said.

“Certainly it’s a facility the town needs, but we must have a great deal of support and views from people.”

The pool survey launch is happening at the annual Ilkley Triathlon at the lido site on Sunday, with survey postcards are going into competitor bags and a stand at the event.

Boards will then be on display in the Library foyer for the following 2 weeks, before a public meeting at the Clarke Foley Centre, Cunliffe Road, on Monday, October 3, from 7pm to 8.30pm.
