A summer hotspot for underage drinking, anti-social behaviour and litter has been relatively trouble-free this year, according to a senior police officer.

And Inspector Sue Sanderson, from the Ilkley Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), praised fellow officers, Bradford Council and youth services for helping keep the riverside area of Ilkley in good order.

During the past few years, the area has been a haven for younger residents and visitors during the summer, leading to a series of complaints about inappropriate behaviour and littering across a wide area next to the River Wharfe.

However, Insp Sanderson said an increase in uniformed officers patrolling the area, and council cleaners collecting litter on a regular basis, have helped reduce the trouble.

She also said efforts by youth service groups to provide a ‘diversion’ for younger people had helped too.

“We have had a very good summer,” Insp Sanderson said.

“Crime has been generally very low in Ilkley and there have been no real reported problems on the riverside.

“There have been no significant calls in relation to the riverside since April, which is excellent.

“It’s not just down to the NPT but also Bradford Council’s litter-picking and youth services by providing a diversion and taking them (young people) away from riverside areas.

“It’s been very much a joint operation.”

The riverside area had been a focus for the NPT in Ilkley, and speaking at a meeting of the parish council, Insp Sanderson said policing priorities in the town are being reassessed.

She said the new priorities would be considered after a PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting next week and also invited residents to contact the NPT with any issues. Call (01274) 475301 or e-mail hanpt1@westyorkshire.pnn.
