Otley Town 1 Boroughbridge 2
(after extra time) Otley Town suffered their second cup final defeat in heart-breaking fashion Boroughbridge snatched a last-minute equaliser and then an extra-time winner to lift the trophy at Wakefield City’s ground.
It was a hard blow to take for an Otley side who had been beaten in the West Riding Challenge Cup final by Bay Athletic a week earlier.
Now they they will have to pick themselves up for next Wednesday’s Wharfedale & District Challenge Cup final against Ilkley Town at Pool’s Arthington Lane ground kick off 6.45pm.
When the sides met in the third round of the League Cup, Otley won 5-3 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 at the end of extra-time.
Otley, despite their hectic schedule, took the game to Boroughbridge.
Luke Danskin had two good opportunities in the first five minutes. On the second occasion he was denied by the woodwork.
Boroughbridge also hit a post after 25 minutes when Jimmy McDaid was put in the clear by Baz O'Neill Both sides were giving little away until the 38 minute when Jimmy Tucknott fouled Scott Cater in the box and the hardest decision for the referee was to find the penalty spot which was duly completed by Chris Davey to give his side the half time advantage.
Phillis was the busy of the two keepers in the second half pushing away efforts from Ben Clayton and Chris Hastings with Alastair Hogg saving comfortably from Cater and then seeing his next effort glance the bar.
Just when it looked as if Town would be lifting the cup, Paul Eagling fired in the equaliser in injury time.
A serious facial injury to Tom Smith forced Manager Daz Ekin to bring on Mark Burneston as his final substitution which proved to be the Midas touch when five minutes into extra time the youngster put Bridge ahead.
Three minutes from the end Hogg had to produce the save of the night to keep out Cater’s fierce drive.
