Children have been giving up their play time to make operating theatre gowns in support of an appeal providing medical help to children living in poverty.
Groups of pupils of Burley and Woodhead Primary School have gone without their lunch break play time for weeks, instead making theatre gowns for the BBC Blue Peter ‘Send a Smile’ appeal.
The BBC programme has teamed up with global charity Operation Smile to assist 5,000 medical volunteers in 42 of the world’s poorest countries perform free cleft lip and cleft palate reconstruction for children. After hearing how hard life can be for children needing facial surgery, the schoolchildren were eager to help.
They have had great fun designing t-shirts to be worn as theatre gowns, saving Operation Smile a cost of £3 per patient.
Our picture above shows Laura Donohue 11, Abigail White 10, Jake Downs 11, rhiannon Forbes-Wake, 11, and Freya Wardman, 10, showing off some of the theatre gowns created by them and their colleagues, right, who gave up their lunch breaks and worked so hard on their charity project.
