Ilkley Film Society presents its traditional Christmas double bill on Sunday 8th December at Ilkley Playhouse.
The 6pm screening will be Fallen Leaves, the latest (and possibly final) film from Finnish master Aki Kaurismaki who has made regular appearances on the Film Society's programmes over the last 25 years.
Kaurismaki had announced his intention to make no more films after the 2017 release of The Other Side Of Hope but world events impelled him to make this hopeful love story about two lonely people in Helsinki, featuring the deadpan humour which characterises his work.
The 8pm screening will be Smoking Causes Coughing, a riotous French comedy which sends up the superhero blockbuster genre. As a bonding exercise after a devastating fight with a giant turtle, a team of vigilantes is sent on a retreat by their chief (a rat !)but are summoned back into action when Earth is threatened by Lezardin, Emperor of Evil.
Please note that this film has a 15 certificate, and no one under that age can be admitted.
Mince pies, tea and coffee will be served in the interval between films, and the evening should provide a light-hearted prelude to the Christmas break. Film Society screenings will resume in the New Year.
Guests are welcome, as always, and can see both films for the price of a single ticket (£5, cash only) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 or email secretary@ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk to ensure admission.
Further information about the film and the rest of the Film Society season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
