WITH over 25 stalls run by top quality local artists and artisans, St. John's Church in Ben Rhydding is hosting a Christmas Fair in the church and hall this Saturday.
With a variety of crafts providing a selection of unusual gifts for sale, plus a cafe and a tombola, organisers say there should be something of interest for all the family, and are hoping for a sizeable turnout.
The Christmas Fair will be the latest of several fund-raising events held by St. John's this year for its Under One Roof campaign. This started last year when it was found that with some tiles coming loose and occasional leaks, the roof over the north aisle above the children’s area and musicians’ space was in urgent need of refurbishment.
Extensive work on the church's main roof was carried out some years ago. The work involved this time will be similar and include stripping, replacing the oak holding pegs, the addition of new insulation and re-roofing. Gutters and downpipes will be refurbished and up to date insulation will also be installed, ensuring the whole roof will then be insulated, improving heat retention.
The work is estimated to cost in the region of £50,000 of which £35,000 has already been raised partly from several generous donations, a grant and other fund-raisers.
Church warden, Caroline Watson said: “It's a huge job, but the fund-raisers have proved very successful and we really appreciate the great support we've had from the local community.”
These other events have included a family barn dance, a quiz, a bridge and afternoon tea event and an auction of promises.
Caroline added: “Also, we've another couple of ideas in the pipeline, the next up before Christmas being a quiz on Saturday November 23rd.”
The Christmas Fair is in St John's church and hall on Saturday, November 16th from 10am - 3.30pm.
The quiz follows on Saturday November 23rd from 7.30pm -10pm with a bar and refreshments available from 7pm. Tickets for teams of up to six people, cost £7.50 per person on Eventbrite or £10 on the door.
