WINNER of seven Oscars, the historical epic Oppenheimer is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, November 10th (7:30pm, Ilkley Playhouse). Because of the film's three-hour length the staring time is 30 minutes earlier than usual.

The film is the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who directed the Manhattan Project during World War 2, and oversaw the development of the first nuclear weapons, the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

At the 2024 Academy Awards ceremony, as well as winning the Oscar for Best Film, Oppenheimer generated Oscars for Christopher Nolan (Best Director & Best Screenplay), Cillian Murphy (Best Actor) and Robert Downey Jr. (Best Supporting Actor). Oscars were also awarded for its cinematography and musical score. The cast also includes Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Kenneth Branagh.

Following the Film Society's policy on American films Oppenheimer will be screened with hard-of-hearing subtitles.

Guests are welcome, as always, (tickets £5, cash only) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 or email secretary@ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk to ensure admission. Further information about the film and the rest of the Film Society season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
