The astonishing German historical drama The Zone Of Interest is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, November 3rd (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
It is 1943. A German housewife is busy in her idyllic home and her five children are playing happily in the garden. But on the other side of the garden wall is the Auschwitz concentration camp, the children's father is the camp commandant, Rudolf Höss of the SS, and the mother and children seem oblivious to the sounds coming from over the wall. The camera stays outside the wall throughout the film,
Directed and written by Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast, Under The Skin) adapting Martin Amis's 2014 novel, The Zone Of Interest is a riveting study of the dehumanisation of apparently ordinary people and what the philosopher Hannah Arendt famously called “the banality of evil”.
This is a change of programme from that advertised in the Society's brochure, as the Japanese documentary Black Box Diaries is not yet available for film society screenings. The Film Society intends to include that film in their 2025-26 programme.
Guests are welcome, as always, (tickets £5, cash only) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 or email secretary@ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk to ensure admission. Further information about the film and the rest of the Film Society season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
