The Icelandic black comedy and road movie Driving Mum will be screened by Ilkley Film Society on Sunday 15th September (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

Jon is a middle-aged man living with his domineering mother in a remote part of Iceland in 1980 where their lives consist of knitting for a living and listening to the radio. Her two wishes are to see the famous Gullfoss waterfall and to be buried in the fishing village where she was born. On finding her dead one morning, Jon decides to fulfil both wishes, puts her in the back seat of his decrepit car and sets off on the long journey, taking their dog with them. On the way, a revelatory discovery about his past causes him to make a drastic alteration to one of her wishes.

Films from Iceland are often particularly enthralling, making great use of the dramatic landscape, and director/writer Hilmar Oddson's film, shot in gleaming black and white, is no exception. Fans of the deadpan humour of Finnish maestro Aki Kaurismaki's work should not miss this screening – and later in the season the society will be screening a film by Kaurismaki himself.

Membership for the season is still available, and those interested should visit the Society's website at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk to complete and submit the application form.

Non-members are welcome to attend as guests (tickets £5) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 or email from the website to ensure admission.
