WHEN Ilkley Cemetery opened in 1878 the 13-acre site consisted of two chapels and wide walkways marking out the consecrated and unconsecrated burial areas.

The walkways were lined with trees, mostly conifers and evergreens, and varieties of deciduous trees along its boundaries. The layout has remained largely unchanged for nearly 150 years except for the removal of dead and dangerous trees and the addition of some remembrance and memorial trees in memory of loved ones.

The Friends of Ilkley Cemetery, part of Ilkley Civic Society, invited Sue and Neil Stevens to review the trees in the cemetery and see if it would be worth creating a new tree trail guide for the cemetery.

A spokesperson said: “We are pleased to say that they found plenty to interest them and the new Ilkley Tree Trail - The Cemetery leaflet is now available from the Grove Book Shop or Ilkley Visitor Centre.

"The Cemetery Tree Trail can also be viewed online on the Ilkley Trees website at https://ilkleytrees.org.uk/treetrails/

"Sue and Neil will lead a short, guided walk around the Cemetery Tree Trail on Sunday, September 1 to talk about some of the trees. It starts from the Beanlands Parade entrance at 2pm and lasts 90 minutes. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult."
