A COMMUNITY stalwart who has been delivering major projects in Burley-in-Wharfedale for 43 years has announced he is stepping down.
Tom Sumner MBE, who received the honour in 2001 for his dedication to improving village life, said: "I have been doing community projects around Burley in Wharfedale since 1981, it all started with the installation of the fountain area at the bottom of Station Road.
"Since then, there have been countless other projects including to name but a few the Pudding Tree Garden, the village green areas, the water feature, the Jubilee Garden, the hanging baskets, and of course not forgetting the Christmas Lights.
"The latest project has been the installation of the new Pétanque playing area between the Bowling Club and the library. Following this recent major project I have concluded that after 43 years it is now time to call it a day.
"This does not mean that I will not continue to give my time and dedication to the village in whatever way I can, just that I will no longer be taking on large scale construction projects as in the past. I will continue to work on the Christmas Lights with the support of the wonderful volunteers who give their time every year.
"I would like to thank everyone who has stopped to talk to me over the years showing such interest and giving their support and encouragement in appreciation of the work I have done.
"For all who are interested, the new Pétanque area will be in use from next week to coincide with Burley Summer Festival."
