GROUND has been broken on the brand new fountain project for Ilkley town centre, with preparatory work beginning on the Mill Ghyll site.

Local building contractor Dakin Developments Ltd is handling the initial stages of preparing the site, which is expected to take around eight weeks.

Dakin has been working closely with Improving Ilkley and offering advice on how the project can be delivered in the most cost-effective manner.

The fountain is a modern design chosen after an open call for entries by Improving Ilkley, with the submission by local artist Juliet Gutch winning. The design is based upon the sphagnum moss that is vital to the ecosystem of Ilkley Moor.

Work continues on creating the final fountain, which it is expected will be installed on the site later this year.

Louise Hepworth-Wood of Improving Ilkley said: “We are excited to share that the team are visiting our fountain fabricator James Wilkinson later this week. We will have the first glimpse of the fountain mid-construction, and will hopefully be able to bring you news imminently of its installation date.”

Dakin’s work to prepare the site for the installation will involve a total repair and part restoration of the fountain bowl area, and the installation of the gravity feed which will supply water to the fountain further up the Ghyll.

Louise added: “The project represents a full community initiative with initial seed funding provided by Ilkley BID, support from the landowner Bradford Council and latterly funding from ITC Green Spaces committee.

“In addition the project has been supported by more than 20 local artists who donated works for auction, and over 150 individual donations from local businesses and residents. Any donation over £250 has a name included in the installation as a lasting testament of support.”

Anyone who still wishes to donate and have their name permanently recorded at the new fountain site can do so. Already, 82 naming places have been filled by local individuals and families.

Louise added: “There are still some naming places available if you wish to be included. Please go and see our JustGiving site for further details. Additional funds are still required to fully deliver the project so any support would be gratefully received.”
