RAWDON Golf, Lawn Tennis and Padel Club came together recently to raise over £1,300 for Womankind Worldwide.

Womankind Worldwide is a UK-based, feminist global women's rights organisation that works in solidarity with women's movements around the world to bring about lasting change in women's lives.

Jan Spence, of the club said: "As a female section in the club, we feel so much for the women of the world who do not have access to the opportunities we get in our lives which includes the golf, padel, tennis facilities at our local club. Since we are so fortunate in so many ways, we felt it was a good time to try to make a difference to those that don’t have access to the basics, never mind the luxuries."

Club member Rosie Connell has been a supporter of Womankind Worldwide after a trip to Nepal where she witnessed the hardship of the local women and families there. So when a charity event was proposed, there was only one organisation in mind to support.

Jan said: "The rest of the team were only too happy to get on board to ensure RGLTP club did the best they could to raise funds for this worthwhile charity and got to work."

Events took place over a week starting on July 23 with a ladies golf day, organised by Liz Pennington (Lady Captain) and a tennis social event with quiz run by Lily Wong on the same evening.

Jan said: "It all started well with the golf competition on the Tuesday and the weather shone as a good omen for the rest of the week. The Tennis event was later that evening with the attendees enjoying an ‘American Style’ tournament. Following up with the Padel event on the Wednesday with a day long mixed padel tournament for 32 players. The event included a book lucky dip and bottle tombola. The event and weather could not have been better and all that attended had a brilliant day.

"On Friday a Festival of Padel played by ladies teams from local clubs Ilkley, Rawdon and Chapel Allerton was finished off with a club barbecue as the sun set on a fantastic week.

"It was great to see so many club members coming together to raise awareness and funding for Womankind. With donations from across the club (whether involved in the events or not) it really showed the charitable spirit of the club."
