THE friendly cricketing rivalry between Ilkley Bowling Club and Addingham Village Social Club continued on Sunday, July 7 as the Addingham team made the short trip to Ilkley Cricket Club in a bid to retain their trophy in the much-awaited biannual charity match.

The fixture has been in the cricketing calendar for ten years, attracting hundreds of cricket fans and thirsty spectators alike. Due to the fixture’s popularity, the format was 14-a-side played over 28 overs per innings, with both sides starting on 200 runs.

The match was played to raise monies for Take Heart, a charity that supports coronary care across local hospitals, and West Riding Kidney Patient Association, which helps to support renal patients in the Yorkshire area.

Donations were made in the name of Alyson Symons, a member of Addingham Village Social Club, who sadly passed away on May 8 this year. Alyson was only 45 years old. She had two kidney transplants, both donated by her dad David and mum Joyce, and she was admitted to hospital in January after contracting Covid/pneumonia. Alyson became very poorly while in hospital and ended up in kidney failure. She also needed a heart valve replacement which she received at Leeds General Infirmary where she received care until her final days where she passed away peacefully.

After players from both teams refreshed themselves at Ilkley Bowling Club, the weather cleared, and the match commenced at 2pm.

Addingham won the toss and put Ilkley into bat. The away team’s early bowling was frustratingly effective, taking a handful of wickets before the home side made a defiant comeback. Ilkley ended their innings on 294, helped considerably by Jon Wilson’s emphatic power hitting.

Half-time sustenance was provided by Ilkley’s Pizza Palazzo and the friendly Ilkley Cricket Club bar staff.

Addingham’s batsmen took to the crease and found initial progress difficult, due to the home side’s accurate bowling and athletic fielding. Addingham soldiered on but completed their 28 overs on 232.

The day’s play raised a much welcomed £359, with thanks going to the Addingham sponsors ABV, The Joyful Deli , BEB Contract Legal Services, Claire Wareham hair specialists, KISS and A McLarens Company for another £500.

Sara Mortimer, manager of Addingham Social Club, said: "A special mention goes to regular umpires John Oxley and Neil Godden, and to scorer Mark Dawson. Terry Pattinson, Ilkley Cricket Club Chairman, and Alex Bailey, Head Groundsman, who contributed to the day’s success, and a huge well done to Jo Varley and Oliver Fall for organising the event and teams."

The return fixture will take place at Addingham Cricket Club at 2pm on Sunday, August 18. Food is available and the bar, naturally, will be open. Both teams look forward to pre-match refreshments at Addingham Village Social Club at noon.
