A QUIZ fundraiser is to take place to raise money for roof work at St John's Church in Ben Rhydding.
With tiles coming loose and occasional leaks, the roof over the north aisle above the children’s area and musicians’ space is in need of refurbishment. The work is estimated to cost in the region of £50,000. Some money has already been raised and applications have been made for other grants and funding.
“A big job indeed,” says roof committee member, Caroline Watson, “so we're also relying on some good old-fashioned fund-raising with several events planned over the summer like a family barn dance and a session of bridge with afternoon tea and a raffle. And the first one is a quiz a week on Saturday, May 4.”
The quiz, for teams of up to six people, is in the church on Saturday, May 4th from 7.30pm -10pm. Tickets at £5 per person, can be purchased at the door. A bar will be available and doors open at 7pm.
This current project follows extensive work on the church's main roof some years ago. The roof over the north aisle has lasted longer as it was added to the church at a later date. The work involved however will be similar and include stripping, replacing the oak holding pegs, the addition of new insulation and re-roofing. Gutters and downpipes will be refurbished and it is hoped that up to date insulation will also be installed ensuring the whole roof will then be insulated, improving heat retention.
“All our events are planned with the whole community in mind and we want everyone to feel welcome and involved,” says Caroline. “So we're really hoping they'll be well supported, with people coming along and maybe bring friends along too. And if anyone out there has other fundraising ideas, we'd love to hear from them.”
