The hard-hitting French drama of childhood Love According To Dalva is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday 17th March (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
Over an initially blank screen we hear the sounds of a girl being separated from her father by police. We then follow Dalva, who is 12 years old but considers herself to be an adult woman, as she adapts to life in a children's home and progresses from her initial fury at the separation towards a different perspective on her circumstances, aided by a growing friendship with her room mate, the streetwise Saima.
At the heart of the film is a simply astonishing performance by Zelda Samson in the title role. Rarely off the screen, she deservedly won the Rising Star award at the Cannes Film Festival. Director and co-writer Emmanuelle Nicot, in her first full-length film, handles the potentially difficult material with sensitivity and restraint.
The film has had few screenings in the UK and is not available on disc for home viewing, making the Film Society's presentation a probably unique chance for local audiences to see Love According To Dalva on a big screen.
Guests are welcome, as always, but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 or email using the Film Society website to ensure admission.
