THE distinguished historians Professor Sir Ian Kershaw and Professor David Stocker will be speaking at the Priory, Bolton Abbey on “An architectural mystery at Bolton Priory” on Saturday, March 9 at 4.30pm.
The subject of their discussion is a mysterious recess/alcove on the south wall of the nave and the adjoining passageways. Several historians have delved into the Priory's intriguing architecture but there is no conclusive record of what this recess was for.
Sir Ian Kershaw is a well known historian who began his career as a medievalist. More recently he is known for his works on German history and in particular Hitler. His works have been translated into more than 20 languages and he has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in Germany. He was knighted for his contribution to history in 2002. Professor David Stocker is Visiting Professor at the University of Leeds. His areas of expertise include archaeology, medieval history, buildings and settlements. Together they will try and find a solution to this long held mystery.
Members of the audience are invited to suggest explanations to the conundrum and there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.
The St Cuthbert's Lecture is an annual event held at Bolton Priory; named after St Cuthbert whose portrayal can be seen in the exquisite stained glass window at the Priory. He was an Anglo-Saxon saint of the early Northumbrian Celtic church. A monk, bishop and saint, his shrine is at Durham Cathedral.
Admission is free. Park at Bolton Priory, BD23 6AL.
