A BAFTA and Golden Globe-winning performance by Cate Blanchett is at the heart of Tár, Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, March 3rd (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
She plays Lydia Tár, a world-famous classical conductor and composer, working in Berlin and planning a live recording of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Her reputation, career and mental health come under threat when she is accused, first of favouritism, and then of abusive and predatory behaviour towards young women aspiring to careers in the world of orchestral music.
Writer/director Todd Field's film received six Oscar nominations and should enthral lovers of classical music (Elgar's Cello Concerto is also prominently featured) with its behind-the-scenes portrayal of orchestral and conducting performance. The supporting cast includes some other distinguished names familiar from past seasons to Film Society audiences – Noémie Merchant (Portrait Of A Lady On Fire) and Nina Hoss (Barbara).
Guests are welcome, as always, but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 or email using the Film Society website to ensure admission.
