GHYLL Royd Care Home, an award-winning care home in Guiseley, hosted the Annual Spellman Care Christmas Competition this week.
The competition, which had previously been hosted by Springbank Care Home in Silsden, went down a storm. Residents from across the Spellman Care group visited to judge the cakes, arriving on the home minibus.
For the first time, the competition featured a ‘Home Community’ category, in addition to the ‘Home Chef’s’ category, meaning both the group’s professional chefs and residents, relatives and staff could enter.
The judging started with residents assessing the presentation of the cakes, before moving on to cake tasting, where taste and texture were taken into account. The results were counted by Director Steven Spellman and Group Operations Manager Philippa Young, before being announced in a trophy presentation ceremony.
The home chefs provided various Christmas cakes and supplements, with a cake to cater for all dietary needs.
Ghyll Royd Home Manager Nichola Harrison said: “It was a pleasure to host the 2023 Spellman Care Christmas Cake Competition. The community atmosphere in the home was incredible, with residents and staff chanting in support of the home they were visiting from.
“To win the competition was ‘the icing on the cake’! We’re all immensely proud of our Kitchen Team, and of all the entrants to the inaugural ‘Home Community’ category.
"Plans are now underway for the 2024 Christmas Cake competition, with plans to make it ‘bigger and better than ever’!"
