The Banshees Of Inisherin is Ilkley Film Society's next screening

In 1923 (just after the end of the Irish Civil War) on an island of the Atlantic coast, when local fiddler and composer Colm decides that the company of his life-long friend and drinking partner Padraic has become too dull for him he decides to cut the man out of his life and devote his remaining years to creating a legacy of music. The devastated Padraic is unable to accept this, and his persistent attempts to renew their relationship have unforeseeable consequences.

Writer-director Martin McDonagh's previous film, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won two Oscars. His latest reunites the team of Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell from his 2008 hit In Bruges and received nine Oscar nominations without actually winning any. Filming was carried out on Inis Mor of the Aran Islands and on Achill Island in County Mayo.

There is a fine music score from McDonagh's regular collaborator Carter Burwell, Gleeson reveals a previously little-known talent by doing his own fiddle playing and Farrell delivers the best performance of his career. A strong supporting cast includes the rapidly rising Barry Keoghan.
