THE Oscar-nominated Irish coming-of-age film The Quiet Girl is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, November 12th (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

In 1981, nine year-old Cait is part of a large, chaotic family. With her mother pregnant once more, the girl is sent away for the summer to stay with middle-aged relatives, the Kinsellas. Cait's parents are so neglectful that the girl is dropped off without any luggage. She finds Mrs Kinsella very friendly and welcoming, but her husband seems withdrawn and cold. Cait thrives in the unfamiliar setting of an orderly, well-run household but discovers that the Kinsellas have secrets too.

An adaptation of Clare Keegan's novel Foster, director Colm Bairead's debut film is entirely in the Irish language and was Ireland's entry for the Academy Awards category of Best International Film.

It lost out to All Quiet On The Western Front, which was originally programmed by the Film Society for this date, but which had to be replaced when Netflix refused to grant a screening licence.

Catherine Clinch, who makes her first screen appearance as Cait, is the daughter of the Irish singer Meav who became internationally famous as a founder member of the group Celtic Women.

Guests are welcome, as always, but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to ensure admission.
