THE highly acclaimed British coming-of-age drama Aftersun is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, November 5 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
In the late 1990s 11 year-old Sophie lives with her mother but is holidaying in Turkey with her 30 year-old father, Calum, who is desperate to give her a dream holiday despite his own depression and financial struggles which he tries hard to hide from her. Sophie records the holiday on her MiniDV camera, footage from which is dispersed throughout the film. She also hangs out with older British teenagers and befriends Michael, a boy of her own age, but has difficulty “reading” her father despite loving him dearly.
Calum is played by the rapidly rising Irish actor Paul Mescal who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. In contrast, Frankie Corio had never acted before being cast as Sophie, and was chosen from 800 applicants from Scottish schools and youth clubs. The pair spent some of the two-week rehearsal period together at a holiday resort to make their film relationship more authentic.
Aftersun is the debut feature by Scotland's Charlotte Wells, who describes the film as “emotionally autobiographical”, and has had an extraordinary total of 83 wins at awards ceremonies and festivals. As it is a British film it will be shown without hard-of-hearing subtitles, in accordance with the Film Society's policy.
Guests are welcome, as always, but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to ensure admission. Further information about the film and the rest of the Film Society season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
