GUISELEY based Tranmere Tennis club held it’s first American Style tournament at the weekend.
With a format designed to allow players of differing abilities to complete as evenly as possible it was intended as an end of summer social gathering rather than a serious competition. Participants generously brought food and drinks and the club barbecue was soon busy.
As well as being a social event there was some excellent tennis played and as the number of eliminated players increased and the gin bar and barbecue became busier the noise level of the spectators increased.
The final was a best of seven set between Paul Lawrenson and John Ebsworth against Steve Riley and Carol Underwood. Both pairs played some excellent tennis but Steve and Carol just edged it playing some steady tennis and saw them collect the silver ice bowl and the £1 prize money!
The event was enjoyed so much by everyone it is hoped that may become an annual event.
Tranmere Park Tennis Club always welcomes new members of any age and ability and has active mens, ladies and mixed league teams as well social tennis sessions.
