LABOUR'S parliamentary candidate for Shipley, Anna Dixon, has welcomed the extension of the consultation period on plans to close rail station ticket offices but reiterated her call for a rethink of the proposals.
The consultation on the closure of ticket offices across the country including Menston on the Wharfedale line and Shipley and Bingley on the Airedale line, was due to end on July 26 but has been extended following protests. The consultation deadline is now September 1. Ticket offices at Guiseley and ilkley are also at threat of closure.
Ms Dixon said: “It was clear many people were unaware of the proposed ticket office closure and had not had their chance to voice their concerns. There was overwhelming opposition to the closures. Ticket machines are unreliable and for many rail users, buying tickets online is simply not an option.
“People want to know there is help and advice available at the station. Many had safety concerns about a reduction in staffing at stations. The government must reconsider their ticket office reform proposals and cuts in funding to operators in light of the strength of public opinion. I urge everyone to send their views in to the rail watchdog Transport Focus.”
