FOR several years two members of Aireborough Rotary Club have volunteered in primary schools listening to children read.
This has been complemented by one of the club’s most enjoyable annual projects which has just been completed. This was the presentation of 60 Dictionaries4Life to enthusiastic pupils at Newlaithes Junior School, Horsforth.
Robert Mirfield, of Aireborough Rotary Club said: "In total this year 451 Usborne Illustrated Dictionaries were received by pupils in ten local primary schools. The noise generated when asking classes to find the page featuring dinosaurs makes any visit worthwhile.
"It also gave Rotarians the chance to explain how their Club worked for both their community and internationally donating more than £18,000 in the last Rotary Year to 44 different charities, organisations and individuals. But fundraising is also an important part of the Club’s volunteering activities. It was good therefore to hear from pupils that their families had supported fundraising events including the Easter Egg Hunt and Autumn Seed Trail at Rodley Nature Reserve, the Halloween Trail around Horsforth, the Interactive Quiz, Aireborough Beer Festival, Yeadon Carnival and the three Christmas Lights Switch Ons in Rawdon, Yeadon and Guiseley. ‘What will your next project be?’ was one of the many searching questions posed by pupils."
The other local primary schools benefitting were Broadgate, Horsforth Featherbank, Queensway, Rufford Park, Ss Peter and Paul Catholic, St. Margaret's C of E, St Oswald's C of E, Westfield Junior and Guiseley.
