A KEY event in the Burley-in-Wharfedale village calendar took place on Sunday, June 18.
Local scouts and guides provided Teas and the Green, which followed Burley-in-Wharfedale's annual duck race, organised by Burley-in-Wharfedale Community Trust.
Seventeen-year-old Josie Simpson, who is a leader in training for 1st Burley-in-Wharfedale guides and has been part of guiding since rainbows aged five, said: "A mountain of home made cakes and goodies were baked for the event, providing the community with delicious treats.
"Events like teas on the green are always a highlight, all ages and sections of the community come together to celebrate the lovely place that we live in. It’s always a delight to see the amount of groups and families spending the day together, enjoying the strong sense of community that is felt throughout the village.
"All of this was arranged and managed by Girlguiding and Scout volunteers who came down to the green to help out. This is all in aid of raising money for the Burley scout and guide group - who the majority of the cakes were baked by!
"The dedication of guiding volunteers is felt throughout the village and although many don’t see it, leaders work all year round. They plan unit meetings for all age groups (four to 18 yrs) as well as organising events within the community, like teas on the green, or helping Santa on his annual tour of the village.
"Girlguiding is a brilliant community to be a part of, from being a rainbow and starting your guiding journey, to becoming a leader as an adult and sharing with others your passion in the topics you love. Leaders empower and inspire young girls to explore, try new things and further develop their own interests.
"We are always looking for volunteers to get involved in Girlguiding, whether you want to help out occasionally or help on a weekly basis, we are open to everyone getting involved in the work that we do."
Two leaders shared why they get involved.
Linda Kelly, rainbow leader said: "I enjoy working with children and I wanted to give something back as both my daughters were in guiding and I love being part of the community.”
Sue Vint, guide leader said: "It’s lots of fun being with young people and it’s a rewarding way to volunteer."
