Ilkley Film Society ends its current season on a joyful note with the British comedy Phantom Of The Open on Sunday, June 4 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
The film is based on the true, though scarcely credible story of Maurice Flitcroft who, despite never having played a round of golf in his life, managed to obtain entry to the 1976 British Open Golf Championship by posing as a professional player.
Playing the hapless Flitcroft, Sir Mark Rylance, one of Britain's most distinguished stage and screen figures, shows that comic flair is one of his many talents and he is supported by Sally Hawkins and Rhys Ifans. The screenplay is the work of Simon Farnaby from TV's Horrible Histories and Detectorists, and the film is directed by Welsh actor Craig Roberts who also has a Horrible Histories connection, having played the emperor Nero in the film spin-off from the TV series.
As always, guests are welcome (tickets £4) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to guarantee admission.
Following the usual three-month break, the next Film Society season will begin on September 10. Non-members interested in joining for 2023-24 are invited to visit the website at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk and use the contact page to give their postal addresses to the Membership Secretary.
