THE eerie Argentinian conspiracy thriller Azor is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday 30th April (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).
Yvan, a private banker from Geneva arrives in Buenos Aires to replace his partner who has gone missing in mysterious circumstances surrounded by rumour. As this is the Argentina of the 1980s military dictatorship, Yvan's attempts to fathom what has happened lead him before long into waters where he is out of his depth.
Azor, the feature debut of Swiss writer/director Andreas Fontana, has affinities both with the novels of Graham Greene, and with Joseph Conrad's novella Heart Of Darkness, the source of Apocalypse Now. It was inspired by a letter the director found in the possessions of his father, himself a private banker. Nominated for awards in thirteen countries but not widely screened in the UK, the film grips its audience with its sinister atmosphere and complex plot.
