THE ever-popular Colin Firth stars in Supernova, Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, April 2nd (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
Sam (Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), long-term partners and amateur astronomers, are travelling across England towards the Lake District in their camper van – but this is no ordinary holiday as Tusker has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia two years previously, and the plan is to revisit friends, family and favourite places for what may be the last time.
In the wrong hands this could lead to a mawkish and depressing film but writer-director Harry MacQueen (better known as an actor) avoids the pitfalls of sentimentality in this, his second film and creates a touching and wryly humorous portrait of deep love in the face of mortality.
Supernova received two BAFTA nominations and, in a critics poll last year, was voted one of the best British films of the 21st century. Being a British film, it will not be screened with hard-of-hearing subtitles.
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to guarantee admission.
