BRADFORD Council is proposing a change in the speed limit on Moor Road and Hangingstone Road in Ilkley.
The Council has today published a Speed Limit Order proposing to reduce the limit from 50mph to 30mph. It will bring the stretch of road in the Ilkley constituency into line with the 30mph limit on Moor Road in the Shipley constituency which was reduced last year.
The Council has been in discussions with police for some time about reducing the speed limit on the road. Motorists have been caught out by the sudden change in the speed limit.

In a statement of reasons for proposing to make the order the Council says: “The proposed reduction in speed limit from 50mph to 30mph is in response to a number of accidents on this stretch of moor, including a couple of fatalities.
“The section of road involved is popular among walkers and cyclists due to its proximity to the Cow & Calf Rocks, Ilkley Moor and the Cow & Calf Pub. There are also sheep freely roaming the moorland without any protection from the roadside.
“The Council considers it necessary to make this Order:-
i. for avoiding danger to persons or other traffic using the roads and for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising; and
ii. for preserving and/or improving the amenities of the area through which the roads run at the proposed housing development.”
The move has been welcomed by Councillor Anne Hawkesworth (Ind, Ilkley) who said: "This is much needed. It removes a stupid anomaly of moving from one speed to another - a ridiculous situation."
