THE Otley Show is the oldest one-day agricultural show in the country - running since 1796 - but Covid lock downs and restrictions meant that the annual May Show was cancelled in 2020 and in 2021.
This year’s show was the first held since 2019 and organisers started cautiously planning for the event in September 2021.
Otley Show President Mrs Jenny Cowgill, Chairman Dr Jane Crossley and Show Secretary Claudia Beutelspacher, said: “At times we worried if as many people still wanted a show. It turns out we didn’t need to worry!
“Saturday, May 21st was a dry day, cool in the morning with warm sunshine in the afternoon. We had a record number of visitors; many who had been coming to the Otley Show for years remarked that they had never seen it so busy!
“Many favourite attractions returned – the Sheep Show, Terrier racing, Farrier competitions, Tug of War, Giant Tortoises and Otley Sailing Club giving visitors a try at sailing on the lake. We also welcomed newcomers Stockhole Alpacas, Scotty’s Circus Workshop and SMJ Falconry. Stunt Rider Paul Hannam thrilled crowds in the Main Ring, with his Quad Bike jumping over our brave steward in a Gator, and precision riding.
“We held classes for Cattle, Sheep and Horses with a Cattle grand parade in the afternoon. Sadly our Poultry Show had no choice but to cancel due to Avian Flu restrictions, which was so disappointing to exhibitors. In the Fur and Feather marquee we held classes for Pigeons (they are exempt from restrictions), Eggs, Rabbits and Hamsters. Our Produce and Handicraft classes were as popular as ever with adults and children alike. We must give the Whartons school a special mention for continuing to support us as they have done for years with many entries from their pupils.
“Wharfedale District Scout group helped sell tickets on one of our entrance gates to fundraise for five scouts to attend the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in 2023! They did a great job, and helped with litter picking the next day. It can never be said enough that the Otley Show is a huge effort made possible only because of the many stewards, committee members, sponsors, members and other helpers that donate resources, money and time, all from the local and wider agricultural communities. We work hard to make the day special and memorable for everyone, and we hope we have succeeded this year!”
