BUILT OVER 200 years ago, the Whitakers Arms is situated in the heart of Otley and is popular with locals and tourists alike.
Thought to have been built in 1811, the pub has acquired several names, including the Dram Shop, Kirkgate Vaults, and Quite John's Vaults, referring to the demeanor of the licensee from 1899 to 1911.
Inside, there's a series of underground passages leading to cellars and storage areas, but one mysteriously leads to the parish church, but 'no one knows exactly why,' and in 1988 the landlord at the time stumbled across 'an enormous vault' when clearing out the back garden which is thought to have been a cold store due to some 'rusty meat hooks' being found on the site.
Today, the pub is run by the landlord and lady Monica and Andy Mcknight, who took on the pub in September 2020, and is owned by Star Pubs and Bars (Heineken Ltd.)
Head barman, Jack McKnight said: "The pub is a family-run pub and is really popular with locals, tourists, residents, and walking groups who are coming through the town."
"The stone flooring and open fires make the place very warm and welcoming, whether you're from the area or just passing by."
Despite the town centre location, the pub has a 'fantastic wall enclosed beer garden with outdoor marquee' perfect for summers days, or winter nights, and welcomes families and dogs into the establishment.
Adding to the historic mystery vault and passage leading to the church, Jack confirmed that 'the pub has been known to be haunted but thankfully the only spirits here are now in bottles."
The pub offers a 'vast variety of gins and cask ales, as well as an extensive food menu, which Jack described as having 'the best steak pie in West Yorkshire" on the menu which is 'definitely worth a try."
On a Sunday, a three meat roast is on offer served 'with all the trimmings', alongside other hot meals including burgers, salmon fillets, and chicken fajitas.
Jack said that lunchtimes can be 'very busy' and it is advisable to book 'well in advance. Groups are also advised to pre-order their meals from the menu to avoid any disappointment.
