THE thrilling Brazilian siege drama Bacurau is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday February 20th (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse.

In the near future a young woman returns after many years to her impoverished home town for her grandmother’s funeral. A series of strange events follows which soon appear to be connected with a battle for water rights against corrupt officials. The residents mobilise to protect their community against foes who are willing to kill all who stand in the way of their profits.

A winner of 52 awards world-wide, Bacurau is the work of director Kleber Mendonca Filho whose previous film Aquarius was shown by the Film Society in 2019 and has been described as a cross between a Western and a political thriller. Veteran stars Udo Kier and Sonia Braga give powerful performances. Viewers of a sensitive disposition should note that this is one of the few films in the Society’s season to carry an 18 certificate.

Non-members are welcome as guests but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve tickets (£4). The wearing of face masks is recommended but no longer mandatory.
