PUPILS at Burley and Woodhead C E Primary School have become Dementia Friends.
The school council led a campaign which involved creating a whole school assembly. The council produced a video explaining how dementia can affect the brain and behaviour, and what people can do to help someone suffering with the condition.
They hope that by educating other young people they can create a dementia-friendly generation, giving children increased confidence and understanding when communicating with people with dementia.
Inspired by the campaign, pupils at the school carried out a sponsored walk, each day, for a week, and raised £2941 for the Alzheimer’s charity.
Learning mentor, Sally Hughes, who helps run the student council, said: "As well as the positive impact on people living with dementia today, increasing young people's understanding of dementia will have long term benefits as they approach adulthood and become the carers, social workers, doctors, researchers, employers and adults of tomorrow. Their understanding will hopefully inspire dementia friendly communities, which help people to live well with dementia."
