ON Boxing Day the Airedale Beagles met at the Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa at Bolton Abbey where a good crowd turned out to see them and were treated to mulled wine and mince pies by the hotel.
The Airedale Beagles were established in 1891 following a chance encounter on Ilkley Moor between Dawson Jowett and Tom Clark. Tom became the kennelman and Dawson the huntsman.
Traditionally, beagling is the hunting of the hare on foot with a pack of hounds. At present there is a ban on hare hunting. Nevertheless, the Airedale Beagles continue to hunt, but within the law.
