Thought for the Week
by Rob Fry
SOME years ago it had fallen to me to arrange the leaving “do” for a couple of dear friends who I’d met through the youth work we’d been involved in. They’d moved here as newlyweds, but years later the lure of the North East and a job offer from Newcastle had proven too great an opportunity to pass up. Leeds’ loss and Newcastle’s gain I guess?
It’s not difficult to organise a leaving party, is it? Gratitude for the work carried out, thanks, testimony even, from some who had been helped from their input, well thought out gifts and of course a buffet! The tick list sorted, other than the thought that though friends and colleagues could easily enough fashion a good send off, it would have been good to have someone from Newcastle to say “welcome home” or “welcome back…”
This proved somewhat of a problem for this West Country lad as I’d never travelled that far North, let alone knew someone who could assist. Not wanting to be beaten my only thought was that perhaps I could send a letter to St James’ Park, Newcastle? Sir Bobby Robson was still the manager there at the time, maybe he’d help?
I wrote my letter on the Monday, the “do” was to be the following weekend. Can you imagine my pleasant surprise when on the Friday through my letter box – popped a hand written note on headed paper, saying “To John and Liz, so pleased that you are returning to the North East…” Kind Regards - Sir Bobby.
Alas this giant in football is no longer with us. But on a recent holiday with laughter, tears and learning I enjoyed reading his autobiography. I’m not sure the beautiful game has many left like him today? A legend, a gentleman and father figure - players enjoyed playing for him, and he rightly enjoyed fame and success on a national and international stage. Yet this miner’s son, kept the common touch and made the time to assist with my request.
There are people who leave a positive mark on our lives, sometimes in a big way through hours and hours whilst others through small or simple acts of kindness. Perhaps this piece displays both at work and gratitude suggests that we pass it on, take the time and do likewise…
